AUDITIONS FOR A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE


WaterTower Theatre invites local AEA and Non-AEA actors to audition for the American classic, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE by Tennessee Williams, being presented during the 2024-2025 Season. Open to both Equity and Non-Union actors. See below for detail on the production:

All positions are paid: Equity SPT 6 rate, non-union is $150 per week stipend (If asked to understudy a role, there is a $40 bonus per performance should the understudy go on for the role).

After losing her Mississippi home to creditors, Blanche du Bois relocates to the New Orleans home of her younger sister and brother-in-law, Stella and Stanley Kowalski. Undermined by romantic illusions, Blanche is unable to cope with life's harsh realities. Though she finds a glimmer of hope while connecting with Stanley's gentlemanly friend, Mitch, Blanche cannot face the truth of her own troubled past and ultimately descends into madness.

A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams’ most famous work, premiered on Broadway at the Barrymore Theatre in December 1947 under the direction of Elia Kazan. WTT is thrilled to welcome back the incomparable Terry Martin to direct this American classic.

SEEKING:

We are seeking 9 talented and dedicated actors for our upcoming production of Tennessee Williams' "A Streetcar Named Desire."

Please note the specific requirements for certain roles regarding comfort with intimate acts and the depiction of disturbing scenes. Intimacy/Fight Coordinator will be utilized.

Character List: - Blanche DuBois - Stanley Kowalski - Stella Kowalski - Harold Mitchell (Mitch) - Eunice Hubbell - Steve Hubbell - 3 Ensemble roles which will play the following: Pablo Gonzales, Flower Woman, Young Collector, Doctor, Neighbor Woman, Nurse, Prostitute

Character Descriptions:

Blanche DuBois: A high school English teacher from Laurel, Mississippi, haunted by her husband’s suicide and her own moral and aesthetic superiority. Note: This role involves depicting intimate acts and scenes of sexual violence. *Age: 40s.*

Stanley Kowalski: Ex-military, working at a factory, with a brutish demeanor and quick temper. Note: This role involves depicting domestic violence and sexual assault. *Age: 30s.* Stella Kowalski: Torn between her sister Blanche and her husband Stanley. Pregnant throughout the play. Note: This role involves depicting intimate acts and domestic violence. *Age: 30s.*

Harold Mitchell (Mitch): Stanley’s shy and nervous friend, devoted to his mother. Note: This role involves depicting intimate acts and sexual harassment/assault. *Age: mid-30s-40s.*

Eunice Hubbell: The landlady and supportive friend to Stella. Note: This role may require depicting intimate acts.

Steve Hubbell: Eunice’s husband and one of the poker players. Note: This role involves depicting intimate acts.

Ensemble Roles (played by 3 actors):

Pablo Gonzales: The last member of the poker party.

Flower Woman: Sells tin funerary flowers.

Young Collector: A young man collecting money for the newspaper. Note: This role involves depicting an intimate act.

Doctor: Appears at the end of the show to take Blanche away.

Neighbor Woman: Cracks jokes at the top of the show.

Nurse: A cold, clinical assistant to the Doctor.

Prostitute: Note: This role involves depicting intimate acts and could require stages of undress.

We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. PREPARATION: Actors should come prepared with a monologue- please limit length to under 2 minutes.

Headshot and resume are required at the audition. Roles are open to both AEA and Non-AEA actors. All roles are local hire. No housing or travel can be provided.
