About WaterTower Theatre

Founded in 1996, WaterTower Theatre (WTT) is one of Texas’ leading professional theatre companies and a flagship arts institution in North Texas. WTT has played an important role in developing new talent and new work while encouraging the growth of the DFW artistic community through its commitment to hiring local artists.

WTT traces its origins to Addison Community Theater (ACT) of the 1970s, which performed at the Old Stone Cottage, a 1930s WPA project that still stands adjacent to WTT’s current home at the Addison Performing Arts Centre. Completed in 1992, the Addison Performing Arts Centre is an award-winning 32,000-square-foot facility featuring a flexible Main Stage black box theatre with seating for approximately 200, as well as a smaller Studio Theatre. WTT is the resident theatre company and maintains its administrative, artistic, and production offices within the facility.

Building on its reputation as an intrepid producer of new work, WTT has garnered numerous accolades and presented world premieres including Song of Motherhood (1998), Blind Lemon: Prince of Country Blues (2001), A Country Life(2005), Creep (2015), The Spark (2015), The Great Distance Home (2017), Bread (2018), Goin’ Hollywood (2023), Out of the Loop Festival (2002–2016), and DETOUR: A Festival of New Work (beginning in 2018). By the conclusion of the 2025–2026 season, WTT will have produced 204 plays and musicals, including 12 world premieres and 44 regional premieres.

From 1999 to 2016, WaterTower Theatre was under the artistic leadership of Terry Martin. The company was later led by Artistic Director Joanie Schultz from January 2017 through December 2018. In March 2019, Shane Peterman was named Producing Artistic Director and has since rebuilt the company alongside the Board of Directors, donors, and community partners, including the Town of Addison.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, WaterTower Theatre became one of the first theatres in the country to present filmed theatrical productions, beginning with Doug Wright’s Tony Award–winning I Am My Own Wife. In summer 2021, WTT again led the region by reopening with an Actors’ Equity Association agreement for indoor performances. WaterTower Theatre’s mission is to create innovative, diverse theatre that builds community by fostering empathy and dialogue.

In reference to the character descriptions below—most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following descriptions. But however limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender nonconforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide (from language developed by Kevin Kantor and Emily Tarquin from the Actors Theatre of Louisville)

BREAKDOWN

GOOD NIGHT, OSCAR

SYNOPSIS: It’s 1958, and Jack Paar hosts the hottest late-night talk-show on television. His favorite guest? Character actor, pianist and wildcard Oscar Levant. Famous for his witty one-liners, Oscar has a favorite: “There’s a fine line between genius and insanity; I have erased this line.” Tonight, Oscar will prove just that when he appears live on national TV in an episode that Paar’s audience—and the rest of America—won’t soon forget. Good Night, Oscar explores the nexus of humor and heartbreak, the ever-dwindling distinction between exploitation and entertainment, and the high cost of baring one’s soul for public consumption.

Rehearsals AND performances at The Addison Performing Arts Centre

SEEKING:

Oscar Levant - Male, early 50s
A brilliant concert pianist, composer, actor, and famously self-deprecating wit. Deeply tormented by mental illness, anxiety, and a
paralyzing awareness of his own inadequacies, especially in comparison to his late friend George Gershwin. Oscar is both tragic
and funny — a man whose cleverness often masks deep pain.Neurotic, brilliant, self-aware, irritable, depressive, razor-sharp wit

June Levant - Female, mid-40s
Oscar’s long-suffering but loving wife. Former actress and elegant under pressure, she often finds herself navigating Oscar’s
moods, breakdowns, and unpredictable behavior with grace and resilience. She’s no pushover — June is practical, emotionally
intelligent, and stronger than Oscar gives her credit for. Loyal, poised, quietly strong, emotionally intelligent

Jack Paar -
Male, 30s–40s
The urbane host of The Tonight Show, quick with a clever line, smooth in manner, and always in control — at least on the surface. He’s fascinated by Oscar's rawness and unpredictability, but is also wary of how that volatility might impact the tightly controlled medium of television.Charming, witty, image-conscious, sharp

Bob Sarnoff - Male, 40s–50s
President of NBC during the Golden Age of television. Wears the weight of the network on his shoulders. More bureaucrat than
artist, he’s deeply concerned with sponsors, public image, and not rocking the boat. Oscar makes him nervous — genius is great
as long as it doesn’t upset the advertisers. Authoritative, pragmatic, polished, conservative (in outlook)

Alvin Finney - Male, 20s–30s, African-American
A young orderly at Mt. Sinai's mental ward. Dryly funny, quietly intelligent, and deeply observant. Alvin has ambitions beyond
his current role — possibly med school — and finds himself both curious and skeptical of Oscar’s brand of neurotic genius. Wry,
patient, grounded, intelligent

Max Weinbaum - Male, early 20s
Nephew to Bob Sarnoff and Jack Paar’s bumbling production assistant. Earnest to a fault, Max is always eager to help but often
creates chaos instead. Despite his incompetence, he means well and offers occasional moments of accidental insight.Eager,
anxious, clumsy, lovable

George Gershwin - Male, 30s–40s (or ageless)
Appears as a ghost, hallucination, or memory figure in Oscar’s mind. Charming, confident, and effortlessly talented, Gershwin
represents everything Oscar admires and resents — artistic mastery, early success, and immortality. His appearances may be
warm, antagonistic, or enigmatic, depending on Oscar’s mental state. Enigmatic, charismatic, idealized, possibly manipulative
